In this lecture, I walk through what I think is Putin's actual strategy: not a land grab in Ukraine, but a deliberate campaign against the three classical weaknesses that bring empires down — overextension, debt, and civil discord. America is now fighting Russia by proxy, arming Israel, threatening Iran, and antagonizing China simultaneously. It is borrowing to do all of this. And its own young people no longer believe the myths that held the country together. Those three lines are converging.

To understand how a Russian leader could see this so clearly when Western policymakers cannot, I turn to Joseph Stalin — the man American textbooks call a strategic blunderer in 1941. I think he was the most cunning geopolitical mind of the twentieth century. Using game theory, I argue that the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, the refusal to fortify the border, and even the apparent "trust" of Hitler were not mistakes but the only sequence of moves that could turn the Soviet Union from a country the world wanted to partition into a superpower the world chose to industrialize through Lend-Lease.

From there I draw the line forward to Putin: drag out Ukraine without expanding it, distract America through Iran, activate North Korea, expand BRICS to threaten the dollar, and keep Xi Jinping neutral so Washington cannot triangulate. I also explain why I think the Western mind — narrow, empirical, logical, inherited from Britain — has a structural blind spot when reading leaders shaped by what I'll call the Russian strategic imagination: intuition, imagination, and the ability to hold multiple selves at once.
