Sony Santa Monica officially revealed God of War Laufey at the June 2, 2026 State of Play. The 20-minute gameplay reveal closed out the showcase and confirmed long-running rumors about Cory Barlog's next project. This is Barlog's first solo direction since God of War (2018), capping nine years of development at Sony's Santa Monica Studio
The premise is a meaningful departure for the franchise. The trailer opens with Faye's death scene at the start of God of War (2018), revisited from Faye's perspective. Her spirit awakens in the afterlife, weakened and disoriented. The goal of the game appears to be Faye fighting through the afterlife to return to Kratos and Atreus. She is the sole protagonist shown in the reveal, though leaks before the State of Play suggested Tyr may also be a playable character later in development.
This is the tonal shift worth talking about. Every previous God of War game has been driven by anger. Kratos against the Greek pantheon in the original trilogy. Kratos against the Norse pantheon in 2018 and Ragnarok. Even Atreus' arc in Ragnarok was largely defined by anger and rebellion. God of War Laufey is the first entry in the franchise driven by love rather than revenge. A wife and mother fighting through the afterlife to get home to her family. That is a fundamentally different emotional engine for a franchise that has run on rage for over twenty years.
The combat looks closer to Devil May Cry than to the recent God of War games, with what appears to be a more acrobatic, stylish, magic-heavy move set built around Faye's abilities. The visuals are exceptional. Watching the trailer, this is the first PS5 game that genuinely felt like a next-generation title rather than a cross-generation release with better lighting. Detail dripping off every frame, lighting that feels actually new, and worldbuilding that doesn't look like asset reuse from Ragnarok.
The mythology mixing is intriguing and unresolved. Faye is canonically Jotun from Norse mythology, but the entities encountered in the trailer — including a red-skinned demon-like figure and a blue-skinned sorceress — do not appear to come from a single mythology. There is also a literal talking gelatinous cube companion shown briefly. The afterlife premise gives Santa Monica narrative permission to draw from any mythology they want, which is potentially the boldest creative decision of all.
Nine years of development, a tonal shift the franchise has never tried before, and visuals that justify the hardware. This is what AAA development looks like when a studio is trusted to take real swings.
No release date confirmed at the reveal. Insiders previously suggested a first-half 2027 release window.
